Increased Minimum Efficiency Standard as of January 2006. Like many consumer products that use energy, air conditioners and heat pumps are manufactured to meet or exceed minimum efficiency standards set by the U.S. Department of Energy. For nearly a decade, that minimum efficiency standard has been 10 SEER (seasonal energy efficiency ratio). On January 23, 2006, the minimum efficiency standard was raised to 13 SEER, a 30% increase over the current standard.
What does this mean for you?We don’t offer products that don’t meet the minimum efficiency standards. All of the products we offer meet or exceed the minimum requirements.
Another change you need to be aware of is the phase out of R-22 (Freon). By 2010, the US Environmental Protection Agency will require that all new air conditioners and heat pumps use “environmentally sound” refrigerant. This change has been mandated in an effort to help protect the Earth’s ozone layer.
What does this mean for you?Since refrigerant standards will be changing within the next couple years, if you purchase a new system, we recommend that you purchase one that operates on the new refrigerant, R410A. Once these standards are in effect, the current refrigerant (R-22) will become increasing more expensive to purchase since the production will be capped. Purchasing a system that has the new refrigerant (which has been on the market since 1996) will save you money in the long term. |
